About Us
How does centripetal force act on a car?
Going around a banked turn, the normal contact force acting on the car by the road provides the centripetal force.
Breaking down the equation
A car of mass 1000kg is travelling around a roundabout of radius 10m. The roundabout is inclined at a 30° angle.
$$\begin{align*}\text{Net force vertically} \\N \cos \theta &= mg \\N \cos 30^\circ &= 1000(9.81) \\N &= \frac{1000(9.81)}{\cos 30^\circ} = 11328 N \\ \text{Centripetal force} &= N \sin \theta \\&= 11328 \sin 30^\circ \\&= 5664 N \\\frac{mv^2}{r} &= 5664 \\v &= \sqrt{\frac{5664(10)}{7000}} = 7.53 \, ms^{-1} \end{align*}$$CONTENT$nbsp;
